Join Lori Brandt for a FREE class on Essential Oil basics!

Did you know that the average person applies 300 chemicals to their body every single day, and 80 of those chemicals are before breakfast?  Some of the biggest pollutants in our homes are from fabric softener, dryer sheets, air fresheners, and candles.   Health and safety data exists for only 15% of all the chemicals in products we use in our home!

Laura has come to firmly believe that Essential Oils are a better way.  They can be used for and replace cleaning supplies, personal care products, and more.  But it is important to use oils that are PURE, from plants that are grown organically and pesticide free, then properly distilled at the right temperature and without solvents.

Essential oils have enhanced lives for thousands of years, offering a variety of benefits from cosmetic and dietary purposes to spiritual and religious use.  Extracted through careful steam distillation, resin tapping, and cold pressing, the purest essential oils are far more powerful than the botanicals from which they come.

Join Lori for the FREE workshop on Essential Oils!  There will be freebies/giveaways as well!  Please reserve your space online!  These workshops will recur regularly so check back and sign up if you can't make this one!

Medicine is not one size fits all  -- come learn about Ayurveda with Kerry Harling!

Do you feel like your life is a struggle?  Do you drink coffee in the morning to get your day started?  Do you work through lunch?  Do you crave sweets, caffeine, chips, bread, or a nap in the afternoon?  Have you tried losing weight in the past 3 years and just given up?  Do you tend to have bouts of worry, anxiety, and depression?  Do you have difficulty remembering things?  Do you finish your day feeling like you were hit by a bus?  Do you wake up tired without the motivation to get up and go?

Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that has been practiced in India for over 5,000 years.  Spreading to the West as a “sister science” of Yoga, it offers tremendous insight into how we can live healthier, more balanced lives. Through understanding our connectedness to Nature, Ayurveda sees each person as a unique combination of the 5 elements – ether, air, fire, water, and earth. These elements come together in different ways to form different body types, personality traits, and tendencies for specific diseases.

In this workshop, we will discuss how to understand your constitution, and how this information can help you to find your unique state of balanced health. We will discuss how to use food as “medicine,” as well how to improve digestion and increase immunity through simple Ayurvedic recipes and remedies.

Learn simple techniques of Ayurveda specifically for you...to support health and vitality!

Pattabhi Jois, Guruji, in order to fully connect to this lineage and embrace and surrender to a teacher that could help facilitate her growth and provide a deep source of inspiration. Since Guruji’s passing in 2009 Krista continues to make the yearly pilgrimage to India to study with Guruji’s grandson R. Sharath Jois who has dedicated his life continuing the work of Guruji.

Krista’s dedication to her personal yoga practice and the Ashtanga lineage shine through in her teaching. Her energy is contagious and inspiring because she lives this yoga daily and experiences tremendous fulfillment in helping people find and deepen their growth in this practice. Krista continues her trips to Mysore each year to continue her own studies because she believes it is very important all students have a teacher, a guide, to aid and inspire along the path.

Join Krista at The Shala of Pittsburgh Ashtanga Yoga for for Mini-Myosre Intensive and deepen your yoga practice with 3 Morning Mysore sessions and 3 afternoon workshop sessions with this inspiring authorized teacher!

Mysore

"Mysore style" is traditionally practiced silently, with individual instruction, and is named after Mysore, India, where Ashtanga Yoga originated and was taught by Sri k Pattabhi Jois for many years.  Anyone is welcome to come to this class, but it is recommended you have attended Mysore class at minimum once prior at The Shala.  Students will work at their own pace, according to his or her individual needs, while Krista walks around the room providing hands on adjustments and verbal instruction as needed.  Mysore style is the absolute best way to learn and practice yoga.  It enables you to create a dedicated, daily practice that will take you infinitely deeper into the peace and calm a quiet mind and strong body can provide.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Mornings Nov 10, 11, 12, 2017    8:30am to 11am

Investment:  $40 each session

Deconstruction Before Reconstruction

Intended for students with a daily practice.  We go through phases in our practice.  In the beginning it feels good, and we feel good for doing the practice.  But as you get deeper into your practice the honeymoon phase ends as you start to uncover deep seated physical and emotional blockages.  These blockages must be dealt with in order for us to let go of that baggage we hold deep within our bodies and minds.  This can be extremely uncomfortable both physically and mentally and this is often the point where people either choose to face themselves and dig deep, keep practicing but on a very surface level, or walk away from this yoga altogether.  In this workshop, we will learn how to deal with the discomfort we face in our yoga asana practice.  Muscles, bones and nerves, emotional scars, fears and hurts...they all come to the surface with daily asana practice.  Join Krista in a discussion about deconstruction before reconstruction.  Suitable for all levels.

Friday, November 10, 2017    12pm - 2pm

Investment:  $45

Ground It Down, Twist It Out

A phenomenal and eye opening session of all levels of practitioners.  Once we can truly root and stabilize the body we can take any twist infinitely deeper in asana practice.  Spend the afternoon with Krista exploring how to better stabilize the body through the hands, feet and pelvis, which then allows us to tap into opposing forces as we ground down and lift and twist up and out.  You will be truly amazed how much deeper you can take any of your twists once you can safely, steadily, and strongly root your body and your mind.

Saturday, November 11, 201712pm - 2pm

Investment $45

Digging Deep Into Backbends

Spend the afternoon with Krista digging deep into your waist, your back, and your heart.  Understanding the emotional and physiological connection to back-bending can help you infinitely deepen your physical understanding of back-bending.  Utilizing various back bends from the Ashtanga series, we will explore the use of the waist, the heart and the spine in back bends and look into how emotions help or hinder our growth.  Leave this session with a new found love of back bends, a new appreciation of our own "perceived" limitations, and tools to take your practice to a new level.  Suitable for all levels.

Jump forward from down dog, jump back to Chaturanga from standing, jump through to seated, jump back to Chaturanga from seated..... the "jump" list goes on (and is it really jumping???)!

This workshop is geared toward helping the student understand the importance of transitions in the Ashtanga method, and learn to establish techniques and methods necessary to eventually master these floating transitions. We will review and break down how to approach jumping forward from down dog and jumping back from standing, jumping through to seated and back from seated, and more of the lesser known transitions in the primary and second series of Ashtanga Yoga.   Suited for all levels, Laura will teach you how to develop and grow into these transitions wherever you are at in your practice.  Be prepared to sweat as she reviews stretches and strengthening exercises, and challenges you to find your inner strength and courage to lift "up" as you move through your practice.

It's time to lift up yogis!

Mysore Intensive with Taylor Hunt

Join us at The Shala for a 3 day mini-Mysore Intensive with KPJAYI Authorized Level 2 Ashtanga Yoga Instructor Taylor Hunt.

Taylor Hunt is a devoted student of Ashtanga, a system of yoga originally transmitted by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. The system is now transmitted by his teacher, Sharath Jois, in Mysore, India.  Taylor was the first Ashtanga teacher in Ohio granted Level II Authorization to teach from the Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute (KPJAYI) in Mysore, India. He is dedicated to sharing the transformative and healing practice with others by teaching daily Mysore classes at Ashtanga Yoga Columbus and offering workshops around the country. He is also the author of the recently published book, A Way From Darkness, and director of the Trini Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to sharing the life-changing practice of Ashtanga with those suffering from addiction.

Schedule:

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings (March 24, 25, 26):

Mysore 7am to 9am followed by Pranayama, Chanting, Sutra Study 9am to 10:30am

Friday, March 24 1pm to 3pm  Tristhana Method:  Breath, Bandha, & Dristhi

Come prepared to explore the basis of the Ashtanga method known as tristhana. Tristhana means the three places of attention: breath with bandha (internal energy locks), asana, and dristhi (gazing point). When practiced simultaneously, the tristhana method becomes a tool to steady the mind transforming the physical practice into a moving meditation. In this workshop, we will explore the internal elements of the practice while taking a deeper look at the fundamental poses of the vinyasa sequence.

Saturday, March 25 1pm to 3pm      Ekam Inhale, Dwe Exhale: Learning the Count

The Ashtanga practice has a specific vinyasa count for each movement. The count is intended to keep the practitioner focused on the breath and in the present moment. By extending the length of each inhalation and exhalation to match the vinyasa count, internal heat is produced which purifies and detoxifies the body. This workshop gives the opportunity to learn the proper count in order to better facilitate a meditative practice. This is a fun and interactive workshop for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of the practice.

Sunday, March 26 1pm to 3pm           Intro to Second Series

The second series is called nadi shodana which means to cleanse the nervous system. The series works on the subtle body by opening the channels allowing prana to move freely. In this workshop, we will take an in-depth look at the Second Series from alignment of the physical postures to the energetic qualities. Learn how to safely approach these challenging postures.  Open to all levels but be prepared to work!

Registration will be by day, not by individual sessions

The Essence of Sadhana Weekend with Tim Miller

The Essence of Sadhana—A Weekend with Tim Miller

The practice of Ashtanga Yoga is an ancient and powerful discipline for cultivating physical, mental and spiritual health. Progressive techniques of breath, posture and movement, cleanse, stretch and strengthen the body as well as focus and calm the mind. A deeper experience of the self becomes possible through consistent practice.

Tim Miller has been studying and teaching Ashtanga Yoga for over thirty years and was the first American certified to teach by Pattabhi Jois at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India. Tim has a thorough knowledge of this ancient system, which he imparts in a dynamic, yet compassionate and playful manner. “My goal as a teacher is to inspire a passion for practice. The practice itself, done consistently and accurately, is the real teacher.”

Friday Morning, 7am - 9am:  Mysore with Tim Miller

This class will be limited to 30 students.  Prior Mysore experience with an established Ashtanga Yoga practice is required to attend this session.

Friday Evening, 5:30pm - 8:00pm:  Taming the Mind (SESSION FULL)

“Roots and Wings—The Mysterious and Elusive Bandhas”

Foundational to the practice of Ashtanga Yoga is the application of Mula Bandha and Uddhiyana Bandha to bring steadiness and lightness to the body, length and smoothness to the breath, and concentration to the mind.  Through an exploration of different asanas and pranayamas we will discover how the proper application of the bandhas can take our practice to the next level of “Mindfulness” by tempering the excessive Rajasic quality of our minds. (Light practice, suitable for anyone—2.5 hours)

Saturday Morning, 9am - 11:30am:   Enlightening the Body

“The Primary Series of Asanas—An Archetype of Sadhana”

A brief synopsis of Sadhana Pada (Chapter Two of the Yoga Sutras) followed by Yoga Chikitsa (Primary Series), a systematic and profound methodology for reducing Tamas by detoxifying the body, removing excess Apana from the system, and quite literally, bringing us to our senses.  The class will conclude with the Hanuman Chalisa—40 verses in praise of the embodiment of perfect Sadhana (Hanuman). (Strong practice—2.5 hours)

Saturday Afternoon, 1:30pm - 4:00pm:  “Consulting the Jungle Physician”

Good teachers and practitioners recognize that the practice of yoga involves work on the physical, psychological, and spiritual levels of the human being.  Tim brings 35 years of practical experience as a yoga teacher, extensive study of anatomy, pranayama, yoga philosophy, Indian mythology, Jyotisha (Vedic astrology), mantra, and kirtan to better assist his students in their Sadhana.  This will be an open forum to ask yoga related questions—on therapeutics, biomechanics, evolution of practice with age, history of ashtanga yoga, pranayama, yoga philosophy, etc. (No practice, some asana—2.5 hours)

Sunday Morning, 9:00am - 11:30am:  Enlightening the Body Even More

“Nadi Shodana—An Introduction to the Intermediate Series of Asanas”

An explanation of the purpose of the second series and its relationship to the Pranamaya Kosha (Energy Body), the Chakras, and the Kundalini Shakti, plus an introduction to Nadi Shodana that includes an in depth preparation for some of the more challenging poses, like bhekasana, kapotasana, and eka pada sirsasana (strong practice—2.5 hours)

Sunday Afternoon, 1:30pm - 4:00pm:  Unveiling the Spirit

“Polishing the Mirror—Pranayama, Mantra and Kirtan”

An exploration of the practice of Pranayama and Mantra to cultivate the Sattvic quality and awaken the Buddhi (the awakened mind), and a grand finale of Kirtan to take us Nirguna (beyond the Gunas) and into the Anandamaya Kosha (the abode of bliss) (No asana—2.5 hours)

***Students are encouraged to register for the entire weekend, with or without Mysore Class depending on your Ashtanga Yoga experience.  As such, registration for individual sessions will open later.***

***Please note this is NOT a teacher training.  No credit hours or certificates are issued as a result of your attendance.  Attending this workshop does NOT qualify you to teach Ashtanga Yoga.  This workshop series is designed to deepen your yoga practice, whatever that may entail for you.  Please enjoy this rich opportunity to study with one of the lineage's true gurus!***

Standing in Your Strength

  • The Shala of Pittsburgh Ashtanga Yoga (map)

We often walk and stand on our legs without giving it much thought. It follows that in our standing yoga postures we can also take our standing ability for granted. We don't cultivate as much strength and awareness in our legs, hips and torso as we could. This workshop will focus on anatomy, alignment and engagement techniques that help to cultivate awareness and strength in the standing postures of Ashtanga Yoga.

Lizandra has used the Ashtanga Yoga method to recover from a serious spinal cord injury. In the past 7-8 months she has deepened her understanding of what it takes to stand strong in life and in her standing postures. She is excited to share what she has learned with the participants of this workshop

Finding Your Hips

  • The Shala of Pittsburgh Ashtanga Yoga (map)

THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL!

Why are we open in one area of the hips but tight in another?  Hips, where are you, anyway?  This workshop is designed to help you learn more about yourself through your hips.  Through discussion and exploration, we will learn where we are tight or loose in our hips (everyone is different!), how aware or unaware we are of our hips in space, and what emotions we dredge up as we begin to develop increased awareness in this area of our body.   This class will start with a review of the anatomy of the hip, move forward with discussion and exploration of our hips based on what we learned from the anatomy portion, and will close with a 1 hour practice that is geared toward increasing awareness of our hips in space and opening up those “tight spots”.

Remember, your legs are attached to your hips:  what you can or cannot do with your hips will largely influence what you can or cannot do with your legs, and vice versa!

Pre-Register:  $30

Walk-In:  $35

Space is limited to 15 students to maximize individual attention and instruction

*****Refund Policy:  Refund can only be issued with 48 hour minimum cancellation notice.   If 48 hour cancellation notice not given, refund or credit cannot be given.******
