Join Wade Oakley for a weekend exploring the rich tradition of ashtanga yoga. Authorized Level II by Guruji R. Sharath Jois in 2018 and an Advanced B practitioner as his student, Wade strives to share the practice of ashtanga yoga in a way that is approachable to all, sustainable for life, and directly supportive of personal growth. He began practicing at the University of Virginia in 2012 under the guidance of Certified teacher John Bultman and continued his studies in India, making many extended trips to Mysore from 2014 onwards to study with Sharathji. Wade seeks to instill a sense of curiosity and personal ownership in a student’s yoga journey. He firmly believes that the cultivation of an ashtanga yoga practice can be boundlessly enriching. 6pm-8pm - The Method: Using Structure to Create Space
What happens when we learn the “rules” well enough to break them gracefully? Scaffoldings aren’t meant to be part of the finished product! In the workshop, we’ll break down the components that make up the scaffolding of our ashtanga yoga system: breath, bandha, drishti. How can these tools turn attention inwards, leave space for exploration, help us learn from the body, and help us build practices that in turn support the lives we want to lead? Be prepared for a mixture breathing exercises, discussion, and light movement – open and accessible to all levels. space.

7:30am-9:30am Mysore Class
Practice ashtanga yoga with Wade in the traditional Mysore-style, named for the city in India where this method has been developed and taught for generations with individualized instruction.
9:45am-10:30am Strength Training to Support Practice
This workshop offers a practical introduction to how strength training can support and sustain a long-term yoga practice. We’ll explore key principles—like movement patterns not emphasized in yoga, joint resilience, and strength at end range—that can enhance mobility, prevent injury, and deepen body awareness. Designed for yoga practitioners of all levels, regardless of strength training experience, this session offers a framework for applying intentional strength work to enrich your time on the mat and strengthen your sense of ownership in your practice.

7:30am-9:30am Mysore Class
10am-noon Hands as Feet: Arm Balances & Inversions
Perhaps before yoga, it was easy to go through a day without placing your palms on the ground. But the deeper we get into practice, the more we root through not just our feet, but also our hands. Connecting our hands to the grounds opens up a world of possibilities, exciting connections for the nervous system, and new challenges for the brain and body. We will build from the ground up and learn how to safely approach, practice, and refine many of the arm balancing and inverted asanas of primary, intermediate, and finishing. This session is open to all levels - whether you’ve never gone upside down or you can hold a freestanding handstand while having a conversation, there is something to be learned!

Early Bird Full Workshop price is $210 (After July 1, price is $240)

Take advantage of an even deeper discount with the Mysore Gold Star Student Deal - If you sign up for the full workshop before September 1 and you attend at least 18 Mysore classes during the month of September, $30 will be credited to your Shala account to use for future classes or workshops. Must be used with a year of credit award.
