6pm-8pm    Strength, Stability and Breath in Primary Series - $60

Why is the vinyasa count so important? How do you (really) coordinate movement with breath? Join us in learning essential technique and key principles necessary for building more advanced asana. We will detail the beginning of the Primary Series, fine tuning our attention to the Tristana Method and healthy alignment practices. We’ll mix both theory and application to create a solid structural foundation for what’s to come. All levels welcome.

Saturday, September 9, 2023
8:30am-10:30am    Mysore style Class - $40

In the Mysore classroom, Melissa will guide students one-on-one in a group setting. Students will work with their customized practice at a pace that's best for their body and experience level, adding more and building independence as they are ready. Students get the benefits of personalized instruction and adjustments. For this session, students who have an Ashtanga practice are welcome to attend.

1pm-3pm    Backbending Essentials - $65

Backbends are important for balancing repetitive forward folding movements, spinal health, cultivating emotional equanimity, and creating long-term strength. Learn an accessible approach to integrate the core principles of sustainable backbends and find more confidence and ease in your backbending practice. We will explore basic techniques of front-opening, as well as details of some of the deeper backbends from the Intermediate Series. You’ll discover tools to reduce your fear and move calmly into backbends with good mechanics. All levels welcome.

Sunday, September 10, 2023 - $60 Both Sessions
8:30am - 10:30am   Mysore style Class

In the Mysore classroom, Melissa will guide students one-on-one in a group setting. For this workshop, students that have an Ashtanga practice are welcome to attend.

10:30am-11:30am   Advancing your Asana

One-hour talk about a vision for "Advancing Your Practice" for life as a yogi. As a long-time practitioner, Melissa will discuss longevity of practice, overcoming common injury, and how mindset prepares us for pursuing more advanced variations of asanas. Reevaluate your “why” and consider how to move from broad perspective thinking toward a more subtle, detailed focus over time as a practitioner.

Please join us for Shala Community Brunch (11:30am-1:00pm) - FREE and open to the whole community! This month's focus is the Trini Foundation. Melissa is a board member of Trini Foundation, benefitting those in recovery from substance use through Ashtanga yoga classes and scholarships. We’ll be accepting donations to Trini in honor of National Recovery Month in September. Find more information here.

About Melissa Matt

Melissa Matt is the founder and owner of Philadelphia Ashtanga Yoga. She has been practicing Ashtanga yoga continuously since 2012.  She was drawn to the practice after her first daughter was born and was compelled by its capacity for healing and to balance strength, mobility, and mindfulness.

After establishing a committed practice, Melissa deepened her studies as a practitioner and teacher, traveling to participate in various teacher trainings and workshops, as well as extensive mentorship, apprenticeship, and internship programs with her teacher, Taylor Hunt.

As the owner of Philadelphia Ashtanga Yoga, she seeks to cultivate meaningful personal growth, while also fostering a thriving community of Ashtanga students in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Melissa has a master’s degree in Organizational Development and Leadership with a specialty concentration in Organizational Psychology from Saint Joseph’s University.  Coming from a corporate background in non-profit training and professional development, Melissa enjoys traveling to teach Ashtanga workshops within other yoga communities. She is dedicated to helping students connect with their own practice and finds deep value in sharing the transformational opportunity of Ashtanga yoga with others. Additionally, Melissa is a board member, treasurer, and fundraising committee chair for the Trini Foundation, providing Ashtanga yoga scholarships to individuals in substance use recovery.
